THANKFULNESS… How the Worst of Times Can Still Be the Best of Times

Joel Sartore a National Georgraphic photographer, opens up and shares hauntingly personal vignettes about his family to illustrate the true meaning of the word, “Thanksgiving.”

His wife had been fighting breast cancer for 7 years. In January, she experienced a re-occurrence. Soon afterward, her mother passed away. It seemed that things couldn’t get much worse. But, as Joel recounts… “How wrong I was…

How can the worst of times become the best of times? Sometimes, when we think things just can’t get any darker, we are given the opportunity to experience heightened awareness and the discovery and appreciation of things we took for granted.

We often go on with our busy lives and may rarely if ever stop to appreciate the beauty of any singular moment. Instead, we choose to be grumpy and miserable, and think of the things we don’t have, rather than things we do have in our lives.

When tragedy strikes, and strikes again and again, we have a choice. We can crumble and fall, or we can grasp onto what we do have and choose to have hope and optimism.

Joel Sartore and family harbor hope and optimism, but most of all, gratitude for the now, and the belief that the best is yet to come. And it is this thankfulness that is helping him and his family make these “worst of times,” the very best of times.

It is, perhaps, all a matter of choice.
