Strange Weather

Russia is experience the coldest temperatures on record (-50° Centigrade) while Australia is experiencing hottest temperatures (115.7°F) on record. Meanwhile, Chicago is going through a snowless winter, while India, the UK and the Southern US is being blanketed with the white stuff.

What’s going on?

According to meteorologists, climate change is definitely occurring, however, to what degree is debatable. It seems to be a matter of watching Mother Nature in action as the only prognosticator as the experts cannot come to a consensus.

The magnetic North pole is drifting towards Siberia, although NASA reports its effect will have negligible effect on our daily lives. Should they reverse, however, animal migrations, climate and other natural occurrences may wreak havoc.

“The historical records shows us that abrupt climate change is not only possible–it is the normal state of affairs. The present warm, stable climate is a rare anomaly. It behooves us to learn as much as we can about the climate system so that we may be able to predict when the next abrupt shift in climate will come. Until we know better when this might happen, it would be wise to stop pouring so much carbon dioxide into the air. A nasty surprise might be lurking just around the corner. In the words of Dr. Wally Broecker, “the climate system is an angry beast, and we are poking it.”” ~ Jeffrey Masters, Ph.D. — Director of Meteorology, Weather Underground, Inc.

In a NASA Press Release, climate scientist Gavin Schmidt spoke on climate extremes in 2012 and their long-term impact. “One more year of numbers isn’t in itself significant. What matters is this decade is warmer than the last decade, and that decade was warmer than the decade before. The planet is warming. The reason it’s warming is because we are pumping increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”

What does this mean for us?

Be prepared for weather related repurcussions that may impact food, energy, safety and health. Have a reasonable amount of emergency supplies including food, medical supplies, proper clothing for various contingencues, water and water purification products, sheltering equipment, good heat and fire sources and a backup generator if possible.

Hopefully, all will be well. But there’s no harm in having supplies on hand and being ready, just in case.
